There is something about a handmade candle that just feels like a hug. It is warm, it is personal, and it costs a fraction of what you would spend on a boutique candle that does the same thing. This fall, instead of picking up another generic gift, I want to show you three candles you can make at home that look and smell absolutely beautiful.

These are perfect for gifting to teachers, neighbors, friends, or anyone on your list who deserves something thoughtful. And the best part? Once you have your supplies, you can make a whole batch for very little per candle.

Let’s get into it.

1. Pumpkin Spice Soy Candle

This is the one everyone will ask about. A classic pumpkin spice candle in a clear glass jar looks stunning tied with a piece of twine and a simple kraft tag. It smells exactly like you want fall to smell, and it is shockingly easy to make.

What You Will Need

How to Make It

  1. Measure out about 8 oz of soy wax flakes per candle, then melt in the pour pitcher over a double boiler until it reaches about 170 degrees F.
  2. Remove from heat and let it cool to around 140 degrees F before adding fragrance oil. Use about 1 oz of fragrance per 8 oz of wax.
  3. Stir gently for two full minutes so the fragrance binds well.
  4. Stick your wick to the bottom of your jar using the adhesive tab. Use a pencil or skewer laid across the top of the jar to keep the wick centered.
  5. Pour the wax slowly and let it set at room temperature for 24 hours. Do not move it while it cools.
  6. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch, add your gift tag, and tie with twine.

Tip: Soy wax can sink slightly in the center as it cools. If that happens, do a small second pour to fill in the top.

2. Apple Cinnamon Harvest Candle

This one is pure autumn in a jar. Apple and cinnamon together is one of those scents that makes everyone stop and say “what is that smell?” It is familiar, warm, and genuinely comforting. I love gifting this one in an amber glass jar because the warm tone of the glass makes it look like something you would find at a farmer’s market for three times the price.

What You Will Need

How to Make It

  1. Measure out about 8 oz of soy wax flakes per candle, then follow the same melting process as above.
  2. For apple cinnamon, use about 0.8 oz fragrance per 8 oz wax. Cinnamon is a strong scent and a little goes a long way.
  3. Pour into your amber jars, center your wick, and let set for 24 hours.
  4. Add a simple kraft label with the scent name and date made. It makes it feel so intentional as a gift.

Tip: Wrap the finished candle in a sheet of tissue paper and place it in a small kraft gift box for a beautiful, ready-to-give presentation.

3. Woodsy Vanilla Cedar Candle

This is the most sophisticated of the three, and my personal favorite. Cedarwood and vanilla together smell like a cabin in the woods at golden hour. It is warm and earthy without being heavy, and it is the kind of scent that makes someone feel instantly at home. I love pouring this one into a white tin or a simple ceramic vessel for a clean, minimal look that feels very intentional.

What You Will Need

How to Make It

  1. Measure out about 8 oz of soy wax flakes per candle. Melt and cool to 140 degrees F as before.
  2. Blend your fragrance oils before adding to the wax: use about 0.7 oz cedarwood and 0.3 oz vanilla per 8 oz wax. This ratio gives you that woodsy warmth with just a soft, sweet finish.
  3. Stir well for two minutes, pour into your white tins, and center your wicks.
  4. Let cure for 24 to 48 hours. The longer you let a candle cure, the stronger the scent throw will be.
  5. Place in a kraft gift box and add a simple hand-written note or a printed label for that finishing touch.

Tip: This one pairs beautifully with a small bundle of cinnamon sticks or a sprig of dried eucalyptus tucked into the gift box. It takes 30 seconds and makes the whole thing look like it came from a specialty shop.

A Few General Tips Before You Start

  • Use a thermometer. Temperature matters in candle making. A simple digital thermometer makes a big difference in getting a smooth, even candle every time.
  • Let them cure. I know it is tempting to light them right away, but waiting 24 to 48 hours gives the fragrance time to fully bond with the wax. Your scent throw will be so much better.
  • Make a batch. Once your supplies are out, pour all three candles in the same session. It barely takes longer and you will have a beautiful set ready to gift.

These three candles cover all the bases for fall gifting: one is classic and crowd-pleasing, one is warm and nostalgic, and one is refined and unique. Together they make a stunning set. Individually, each one is a gift anyone would be happy to receive.

I hope you have so much fun making these. Tag me if you do!

With love,
Amanda
